The Desert Botanical Garden began in 1939, when a small group of Phoenicians including botanist Gustaf Starck and desert plant advocate Gertrude Divine Webster decided the desert needed saving. It now spans 140 acres among the red Papago Buttes, with 55 acres under cultivation. The living collection covers 4,818 species and more than 50,000 plant displays, and the Garden describes its cactus and agave holdings as the world's largest.

Five main trails organize a visit. The Desert Discovery Trail is the logical start, and the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Trail is a third of a mile of seasonal bloom that also attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. Plants & People of the Sonoran Desert, also a third of a mile, passes through distinct habitats and a traditional Apache wickiup, and explains how Indigenous people of the region used plants for food, fiber, shelter and medicine. Take the highest path for an organ pipe cactus forest and mountain views at sunset, and look for the Garden's first collection cactus, planted in 1939, and the Mexican cardons that stand over 30 feet tall.

Plan on 90 minutes to two hours, longer if you are staying for sunset. From October 1 to December 31 the Garden's hours run from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.; check its site for other months and for early closings, which do happen for private events. It closes on Thanksgiving (November 26, 2026) and Christmas Day. Adult admission starts at $32.95 and children aged 2 to 17 start at $14.95, with special ticketed events extra. Guests with EBT cards can buy $9.95 admission Sunday to Thursday, in person only.

Las Noches de las Luminarias, the holiday-season evening event, has run since 1979; general admission doesn't cover special ticketed events, so check before you book. The butterfly exhibit is seasonal.

Parking is free. The Garden is fully wheelchair accessible and most trails work with strollers. No picnics are allowed, and only service animals may enter outside the specific Dogs in the Garden sessions. Scooters can be rented at admissions, first come, first served, and self-guided audio tours are available. Even in the cooler months bring a hat, water and sunscreen.
