Cape Royal is at the end of Cape Royal Road, 23 miles from the North Rim's developed area, and it is the southernmost viewpoint on the North Rim you can reach by car. At about 7,800 feet, it juts out far enough into the canyon to give a 270-degree view. On a clear day you see the Colorado River far below, the Painted Desert to the east, and named buttes such as Freya Castle and Vishnu Temple. NPS calls it one of the park's premier sunset spots, when the walls turn red and orange and the shadows deepen to purple.

From the parking lot, a flat, paved path lined with stones runs about 0.4 miles to the point, a 0.8-mile round trip with minimal elevation change, and NPS lists it as wheelchair accessible. Markers along the way explain the area's natural history. About halfway, a smaller paved path to the left leads to a railed overlook on top of Angels Window. There is a vault toilet on the north side of the lot and a picnic area to the west.

The drive out is long and slow by design. Cape Royal Road and the Point Imperial road branch east from the main North Rim road, and RVs or vehicle-trailer combinations over 22 feet are not allowed on either because of narrow roads with blind corners. NPS warns that post-fire hazards and weather can close the point temporarily.

Timing matters more than usual in late 2026. The scenic roads were closed for repair from October 15, 2026 and, as of November 2026, have been open again since November 3. The North Rim entrance gate on State Route 67 was due to close at sunset on November 30, or earlier after the first major snowstorm, and the North Rim is closed to vehicles every year from December 1 to May 14. NPS's North Rim status page, updated November 3, still listed the Cape Royal Trail among closed trails, along with the nearby Cliff Springs, Cape Final and Roosevelt Point trails, so check on arrival whether the path to the point is open.

There are no services on the North Rim in late 2026: no drinking water, no fuel and no store, after the Dragon Bravo Fire of 2025 destroyed the lodge and visitor center. Fuel at Jacob Lake and bring food and water for the day.
