In 1972 the Eagles released "Take It Easy" as their first single, and its second verse gave Winslow an unexpected claim to fame: "Well, I'm a-standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, and such a fine sight to see. It's a girl, my Lord, in a flatbed Ford, slowin' down to take a look at me." Jackson Browne began the song and was stuck on that verse; Glenn Frey, who lived in the same apartment building in Echo Park, Los Angeles, finished it. According to Frey, the Winslow line came from a day when Browne's car broke down in Winslow on a trip to Sedona. Browne has also said the girl in the truck was someone he saw in east Flagstaff, so the verse combines two different events.

Winslow needed the attention. Until the 1970s the town did well on Route 66, but when Interstate 40 bypassed it many local businesses disappeared, and the downtown stayed in a commercial rut for about twenty years. The Standin' on the Corner Foundation was formed to revive it by drawing on the song. It looked for donors and planned designs from 1997 to 1999, and the park opened to the public on September 10 and 11, 1999.

The park is a single downtown corner. On the wall behind it, a two-story trompe-l'oeil mural paints a storefront whose window seems to reflect a red flatbed Ford. A Ford flatbed truck is part of the display. A bronze figure with a guitar, titled "Easy" and meant to represent the troubadour of the song, stands by a lamp post under a sign styled like a Route 66 shield. In September 2016 a life-size statue of Glenn Frey, who had died earlier that year, was added, paid for with money raised by a Phoenix radio show, the City of Winslow and the foundation. The brick wall around the park carries donors' names and short stories about what Winslow means to them.

A fire on October 18, 2004 gutted the building behind the corner; the wall carrying the mural was kept. Winslow holds a Standin' on the Corner street festival each year, traditionally in the last week of September, and the City of Winslow streams live video of the corner on its website. It is a short stop, so combine it with Homolovi State Park, about 6 miles away by road, or Meteor Crater to the west. Arizona State Parks lists the corner among the area attractions near Homolovi.
